The Doppler effect or Doppler shift (or simply Doppler, when in context) is the change in frequency of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source. It is named after the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who described the phenomenon in 1842.

(also Doppler shift)
¦ noun Physics an increase (or decrease) in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move towards (or away from) each other.
Origin
C19: named after the Austrian physicist Johann Christian Doppler.
Photoacoustic Doppler effect
The photoacoustic Doppler effect is a type of Doppler effect that occurs when an intensity modulated light wave induces a photoacoustic wave on moving particles with a specific frequency. The observed frequency shift is a good indicator of the velocity of the illuminated moving particles.

1. The experiments are complicated by the fact that the wavelengths of all the lines in the barcode are "red–shifted" by the expansion of the universe. (This is analogous to the Doppler effect that causes the pitch of a fire–engine siren to rise as it approaches you, and then fall as it races off into the distance.) However, this red shift also tells researchers how old the barcode is.
